Basic SEO Tips: Testing Pages, Site Map & Site Submission (Tips 11-13)

October 19th, 2008

Ok, your basic SEO is complete and your site is live. Now, its time to take the next steps into advancing your SEO position and techniques.

11) Time To Test Your Website: Go through every single page and every single link to make sure that it functions flawlessly. The last thing you want when your website launches is broken links and 404 error codes. People will leave and never come back. If Google crawls your site and finds broken links, or links that don’t link correctly, then you face the possibility of being blacklisted. Blacklisted means that your website can’t be search on Google because it will remove the index.

12) Build Your Sitemap: It’s time to build your sitemap. It is fairly simple to do, so don’t freak out! Building a sitemap will help search engine bots or crawlers easily discover all of the pages on your site. The sitemap works as a guide for the search engine crawlers to find every page and link on your site. This will help when they “stop by” to index new pages or information.

Sites that will assist you in creating or building your sitemap:
http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/
http://sitemap.xmlecho.org/sitemap/
http://www.sitemapdoc.com/

You can also use tools from Go Daddy and other website hosting companies to generate your sitemap.

13) Submit Your SIte: It’s time to start submitting your website’s url. I could type until the end of the year telling you of every place you should submit your website, but I’m just going to name the most important ones here. It won’t hurt you to do a little bit of research on your own… that’s how we all learn!

Submit your site to these places: DMOZ, Google, Google Maps, Yahoo, MSN, Live, Cuil, Insider Pages, Gimpsy, Go Guides, Joe Ant, AOL and CIty Search.

Basic SEO Tips: Using Images (Tips 7-10)

October 15th, 2008

Website design has gotten much prettier these days with the use of website editing tools and software that allows designers to expand their visual and cosmetic effects and not rely solely on HTML coding and basic digital imaging.

With this in mind, we must still be sure to fuse images correctly with html, or other web language formats. Here we’ll discuss a few important things that you need to know when using images… and how to use them correctly and efficiently.

7 ) Optimizing Images: When using images in your website design, it is essential that you optimize the images correctly. If an image is too large of a file size, then it will look good, but the page will take longer to load. If you make the image file size too small, then the page will load fast, but the quality of the image will be poor. Make sure to set your images to the smallest file size, while retaining the highest quality possible to the human eye. Note: The standard image size is 72 DPI.

8 ) Naming Your Images: Make sure that you name your images using words that associate with your website and keywords that you have chosen. For instance, don’t name your images something crazy like 24524rhhrkhr3809.jpg, or something simple like pic1.jpg. Instead, make your image names matter. For instance, if you own a landscaping company, name your images landscaping-services.jpg, or landscaping-company.jpg. This will contribute to your SEO strategy in the long run.

9 ) Using ALT Tags: Each image should have an ALT tag attached to it (ALT=”alt image name”). Because search engines can’t identify what the image(s) look like, what color they are, what their purpose is, what text is on them, etc. you must identify them using ALT tags which act as “name tags” or “invisible ink” for the image(s) they represent. ALT tags also help users in the case that images don’t load correctly; the user will still be able to read the images on each page.

10 ) Image Quantity: Be sure to use a balance of images and html or web generated graphics. Too many images make a page load slow, and not enough may leave potential customers uninterested in browsing your site.

Basic SEO Tips: Meta & Title Tags (Tips 6)

October 14th, 2008

It’s time to start building your website. Here are the next few important things that you need to know to get started, or to tell the company that will be building your website (if you have to tell them, then you shouldn’t be using them… just a thought). If this is the case, then be sure to contact Spunk Marketing for your website design.

6 ) Meta & Title Tags: It’s true that because of the deceitful trickery that people have used in the past, Google no longer sees Meta Keywords as important or as relevant as they used to be. That doesn’t mean to leave the out! Make sure you add the below meta tags to your site. Whether every bit of it helps or not… it sure won’t hurt. Don’t over due the content. Keep it simple.

Keep your Title Tag, brief but to the point. Use your company name and your most popular service or product. Try to make separate Title Tags for each page of your site.

meta name=”keywordscontent= Enter up to 10 keywords that are relevant to your website & services.

meta name=”descriptioncontent= Enter your website’s description in complete sentences. Be sure to descrobe your services here as well.

meta name=”subjectcontent= Website subject such as homebuilder, real estate, gardening, etc. A Single word will due.

meta name=”robotscontent= just make sure you have “index, follow”

meta name=”revisit-aftercontent= How often do you want search engines to crawl your site? This mostly depends on how often you update it and add content, but it’s not a bad thing to have.

meta name=”author” content= Simple enter who designed your site, or who owns it.

Basic SEO Tips: The Foundation & Getting Started (Tips 1-5)

October 13th, 2008

Too Many Experts. Not Enough Teachers.

Every SEO company on the market says “we can get you to page one.” Almost none of them teach their clients how or why. They want to control your emotions into always having to rely on them for their services. Spunk Marketing does not believe in this method. Clients pay good money for professional services; there’s nothing wrong with explaining some things as you go along. “Teachers” have always been more favorable than “Account Managers” in my opinion. That’s just who we are.

Providing understanding to your clients is the best way to keep their business, and your referrals will go through the roof.

If you have ever heard anybody say that they know everything about SEO, then they’re probably not being honest. The fact is that out of all of the SEO gurus out there, less than .0001% know everything there is to know about SEO, and most of them work for Google or Yahoo!

What Is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

SEO is the use of basic and advanced techniques used to help your website show up in organic search engine results. This means that more people will see your website, which means that more visitors will visit your site. At the end of the day, the purpose is for you to generate more customer leads.

Organic Search Engine Results are results that are not generated by pay-per-click. They are generated “naturally” according to your website’s content.

Getting Started

1 ) Planning: Plan your foundation SEO and website marketing strategy before you get started on developing your website. You’ll highly regret it if you wait until you’ve already started to start thinking about your strategy.

2 ) Keyword Research: Hire an SEO company to do some keyword research for you, or manually do it yourself by typing in your target keyword phrases. Write down some of the companies that show up in the results and shop their website’s content, layout and strategy.

3 ) Keyword Preparation: Make a list of 5-10 keyword phrases that describe your products, services and company. Include locations if you are targeting a local customer. Do not use single word keywords, use 2-3 word phrases for best results.

Example: If you were a homebuilder selling new homes in Atlanta; you would want to use “Atlanta New Homes” as your keyword phrase. You wouldn’t just want to use “homes” as that could target someone looking to rent homes, sell homes, paint homes, sell appliances for homes, etc. Target your keywords to generate qualified customers. Make sure that you are using keywords that are actually being searched.

4 ) Writing Your Content: Pre-write the content for your website and include your keywords and keywords phrases throughout the content. Try to use one keyword phrase per paragraph. Do not overuse the keyword phrases. Google could blacklist you for doing so. Include keyword phrases on every page.

5 ) Linking Keywords in Your Content: Use keywords and phrases in your content, and link the text to other pages on the interior of your website.

For Example: If you had the sentence “Damascus Homes builds new homes in Atlanta and is dedicated to serving you” you would want to link “new homes in Atlanta” to your services or sales page. Do not direct more than one duplicate content link to the same page. Google will catch this as well.

I Make Easy Money On Craig’s List

October 11th, 2008

It doesn’t matter if you own a business or need to make some extra easy cash at home. We all have stuff laying around in our garage, closet, bathroom or desk that we haven’t used in years and are just sitting around wasting our space. DON’T THROW IT AWAY!

I just started using Craig’s List last week and I have already sold 13 video games, some speakers, a computer mouse and keyboard, a pistol grib, an xbox, some controllers and an old TV. It was all things that haven’t been used in years and most of it was sealed in a box at the bottom of my closet.

It’s a free and easy way to make money with stuff that you consider junk. What some people consider junk, others consider treasure!

It’s easy to do. Create a free account, take pictures of what you want to sell and start posting.

View Example Craig’s List Ad

Some Good Marketing & Sales Tips To Help You Out:

1) Take excellent photos of what you are trying to sell

2) Do some research to come up with a good price

3) Create an exciting subject line about your product

4) Write a brief description, and bullet point some of the features of the item

5) Leave clear contact information… try not to use home phone numbers. Stick to cells and email addresses.

6) Use PayPal or meet at a public place to exchange money and products.

7) Never use money grams, wire money, or except checks from people. There is a lot of check fraud on Craig’s List.

Good Luck!

Do They Need New Management?

October 4th, 2008

Some things are excusable and can be gotten away with temporarily, but this has gone over the top. The Kentucky Fried Chicken in Loganville, GA has had this sign up for almost 2 months.

I am officially calling for new management at the KFC in Loganville, GA. The current manager is obviously not qualified to handle the type of work that requires attention to detail, quality and excellence.

Loganville Kentucky Fried Chicken

Loganville Kentucky Fried Chicken

Seriously, how much does it cost to buy a “W” to put on the sign that thousands of potential customers are going to see? I can’t help but judge this KFC every time I pass. If they are not held to a high level of excellence on important marketing strategies that are in the open for people to see, what do you think their kitchen is like? Do you think that they take pride in their cooking and the cleanliness of their building?

I don’t think so.

Please stop putting two “V’s” in order to make a “W” for your Hot VVings. If you contact me, I will personally donate the money for you to buy a “W”.

Also, are the Hot VVings free? What is the purpose of having an empty $ symbol on your sign?

Human Signage: Wasting Money One Employee at a Time

September 13th, 2008

Human Sign Holder

Hammer the sign in the ground and call it a day!

As a small-business owner myself, It bothers me to watch companies throw dollar bills out the window of their marketing budget, and many times I catch myself saying “they paid for that???”. “Human Directional Signs” are one of those things that make my eyes roll and my head shake. It seems that only an elite few are even capable of accomplishing the near impossible task of… holding a sign?

Here’s my issue(s).

Not too long ago I drove by a local K-Mart. There was a guy on the corner of an extremely major, dual 5-lane intersection holding a sign. The only problem is that whoever hired him must not have read over his resume’ and noticed that the guy didn’t pay much attention to detail. THE SIGN WAS UPSIDE DOWN! I proceeded past the guy and his awesome sign-holding skills to a movie with my wife, grabbed some dinner afterwards, and then started on my way back home. The outstanding employee of the month that was holding the sign for $6.00 an hour had close to 4 hours to realize that his sign was upside down [I'm shaking my head], yet still somehow was not able to disengage his addiction to “upside down sign holding.” I’m not sure how to put this situation in politically correct professional terms. Do they make medication for addictions like this?

You think it stops there? It doesn’t. On that same road, about 1 mile away and about 3 days later, I saw a new professional sign holder. K-Mart wasn’t the only business to fall victim to such mediocrity. Hi-Fi Buys was paying a man to lean a sign up against a telephone pole while he smoked a cigarette and listened to his iPod. I guess he could have been taking a break. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

I’ll give you one more for now. It’s a smaller intersection, so you may appreciate the “small town, feel-at-home” atmosphere that this sign holder was providing. This guy brought a folding chair, an umbrella, a cooler and a sign. Did I mention that he had his sign attached to his cooler so that he didn’t have to hold it? You think I’m joking, but I’m not! This dude was getting paid to drink lemonade and count the U.S. states on license tags as cars drove by. Ugh.

It’s not all bad news. I must recognize the people who “own” the sign-holding market in my area. Little Caesars, Verizon and Liberty all have outstanding sign holders. They move, they dance, they jam out, they’re dressed in costumes and best of all… they have their signs in an upward readable position. Who would have thought?

In conclusion, I’m not against human signage. It can be very effective if executed correctly and under some supervision. Here are some good tips for hiring “human directionals” for your company. All of the tips are very basic. Good luck.

Tips:

1) Hire high-energy candidates. You don’t want them taking sitting breaks every 5 minutes.

2) Smiling is a requirement and so is waving at people that drive by.

3) They must have a good attitude. Customers can tell when an employee doesn’t like their job.

4) They need to be able to life .0876 pounds (the weight of the sign)

5) If they come to a “sign holding” interview with a hammer and a folding chair, ask them to leave immediately. They’re probably not what you’re looking for.

6) Give them some job requirements. These days, you shouldn’t expect somebody with a sign-holding job title to know that they are actually supposed to be holding a sign? I just confused myself. Tell them what they’re supposed to do, how long, where at, why and what music they should be dancing to. If it were me I would provide audio of motivation speakers saying “hold that sign!”, “hold it high”, “hold it proud”, “please check to make sure you have the correct sign”, “you can do it!”

Anyways… sorry if I have been a little harsh. It just frustrates me to see such an easy task obliterated by stupidity and mediocrity. There’s really no other way to say it.

The Clicker or the Cap: Which Pen to Use?

September 9th, 2008
pen_marketing_image

The Clicker or the Cap?

Marketing Tip of the Week
This is an extremely basic, but most likely overlooked tip that will help increase your brand effectiveness. Don’t let the first half bore you to sleep. Hold the yawns in and sit up straight. Prepare to be captured by practicality!

Almost every major company, business and church has purchased writing pens with their logo or contact information on it. Logo branded custom writing pens are probably the single most standard branding item purchased by companies of every size. The reason is quite simple; people will use it, keep it in their purse, in their pocket or at their desk.

So What’s the Tip All About?
There are 3 basic concepts or styles that you can purchase when buying a logo branded pen; twist, cap and clicker. I’m officially here to tell you to lose the cap. Don’t buy them. In fact, don’t even think about buying them. They are slightly less expensive than the other options, but once the cap is lost, chewed or broken… the pen goes in a cup full of your competitors pens of those who made the same minor mistake of choosing the capped pen over the clicker just to save 2 measly cents! Now you’re sitting in the “pen abyss” while your ink most likely leaks out of the pen and onto their desk or counter. Now your potential customer is really upset!

Ok, so maybe I’m exaggerating slightly, but you get the point. Buy the clicker. Forget the cap.

The twist concept is alright, but they typically cost as much as a gold trimmed pen with spinners on them and a sub-woofer plugged into the butt.

Stick to the clicker. They’re simple. fairly priced, and will stay in the pockets of your potential customers for much longer.

Pricing
You can find custom logo branded pens starting at around $.18 for the special of the day, cheapo pens. Expect to pay about $.45 for a BIC branded clicker stic.
